WHY RSSC LEARNING
Fair and Effective Hiring Practices, with Cultural Competency in Hiring
A multi module, asynchronous training that prepares the people on your screening and hiring committees to fulfill their responsibilities and choose the colleagues your students deserve.
WHAT IT IS
Learning that meets people where they are.
Fair and Effective Hiring Practices is an EEO training program delivered asynchronously through the RSSC Learning Canvas learning management system. It can be completed in about two hours, on the learner's own schedule.
The Cultural Competency in Hiring add on extends the experience, moving beyond the rules of fair hiring into the cultural awareness that fair hiring requires. The training is made available to employees who are interested in serving on a hiring or screening committee, and each institution's course can be curated to reflect its own mission, vision, values, and local EEO plan.
Participants who complete the training earn a digital badge and a certificate of completion. Your human resources office may recognize the badge and certificate as proof of readiness to serve.
THE CURRICULUM
What participants learn
01
Foundations and language
Common EEO terminology and the vocabulary of diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging, approached with care for its complex history and permission to be imperfect.
02
Roles and responsibilities
The distinct responsibilities of everyone at the table: the screening committee chair, the EEO representative, hiring managers, human resources staff, and the president or chief executive.
03
Sources of authority
The federal laws, state laws, and provisions of Title 5 that govern non discriminatory hiring, including unlawful pre employment inquiries, connected to your local EEO plan.
04
Intentional inclusion
How to recognize and interrupt implicit and explicit bias, how to see through coded narratives of fit, and why a diverse workforce strengthens the whole institution.
05
Equity informed practice
Effective outreach, equity informed position announcements, paper screening, developing interview questions, conducting the interview, and making finalist recommendations.
06
Cultural competence
The foundations of cultural competence, cultural fluency, and cultural humility, the coded narratives to watch for, culturally responsive practices, and recognizing cultural assets.

COMPLIANCE
How it supports your compliance responsibilities
Fair hiring is a legal obligation, and the people who carry it out deserve preparation equal to that responsibility.

✓ Prepare EEO representatives and committee members to meet the expectations of federal law, state law, and Title 5.
✓ Reduce the risk that unlawful pre employment inquiries or inconsistent practices enter your process.
✓ Connect each hiring decision to your local EEO plan and the values behind it.
✓ Document readiness through digital badges and certificates your HR office can recognize.
For institutions using EEO funds provided by the state, this training is a natural and defensible use of those resources.
STUDENT EQUITY
How it serves your student equity plan
Your student equity plan sets goals for access, retention, completion, and the closing of equity gaps. Those goals depend on the people you hire to serve students.

A screening committee that has learned to recognize cultural assets, to interrupt bias, and to see past coded ideas of fit is a committee that helps your equity plan come to life. When your workforce reflects the students it serves, students experience a sense of belonging that research links to persistence and success.

This training is one of the most direct ways to move your equity plan from a document into daily practice.

How it supports student success
Students thrive when they are seen. When the people who teach, counsel, and support them understand culture as an asset rather than a barrier, students engage more fully and stay longer. This training invests in the people who, in turn, invest in your students.
A value added gift
Institutions that adopt the training receive complimentary access to Decolonizing the Classroom, a faculty professional development offering, at no additional cost. It is our way of extending the work of equity beyond the hiring room and into the learning environment itself.
